The Current State of the Backyard Pool Industry

Ahoy, swimming pool swimmers! This is one hell of a fun splash. A fantastic ensemble cast is assembled for this light comedy set around the unexpected guest of a family's swimming pool.

Beneath its surface, the film harbours a compelling layer of philosophical depth. While the generous, nuanced performances of its lead actors are an immediate delight, the movie’s true brilliance lies in how it explores and presents the ethics of the modern nuclear family.

By setting this dynamic against a classic suburban backdrop, the narrative balances the ideals of contemporary domestic life with the quiet compromises required to maintain them. Amaericana thrives here: the pool becomes a voice of suburban dwelling... and quickly challenges us to question whether the suburban dream is a sanctuary for family values or a gilded cage that warps our ethical priorities.

As this is a positive-minded film, it chooses to move away from the dark outcome that could be offered. And instead, with great elegance, it promises a laugh, a thoughtful moment of reconciliation and connection.

The film's aesthetics, which are mostly set around the pool, really relish the bold contrast of a day and night setting. These two different 'light' periods are well handled by the cinematography team, who heighten the contrast for night, making the space appear almost neon lit, and ensure a nice balance for the daylight scenes. This careful presentation of realism helps flex the film's production value, despite its independent budget.

Overall, this is a really impressive short film. One which is written and directed by a team that understands and values their equal parts. The performances and presentation simply help enhance this all. It is, successfully, a very balanced project.
